Balancing work and family life is one of the most common sources of stress for working adults. In this productivity-driven society that we are, more and more people are finding it hard to adequately fulfill their roles both at home and at the workplace.

More often than not, people are unable to find a point of balance between their careers and their families and one is given more priority than the other. This behaviour has been associated with a number of dysfunctional outcomes—strained familial relationships, inefficiency at work, and poor physical and mental health.

Hence, it is very important that we are able to work on balancing work and family life. This may seem like a daunting task, but it is possible if you take the time and care to make it a priority.

EnterpriseCEO’s Correspondent Kehinde Akintan spoke with business executives with vast experience in their chosen fields on how they have been managing and ensuring a balance between their work and social life, the career women shared their experiences, possible tips and advises for young people who intend to pursue a career and particularly in Lagos.

Busayo Adegoke   

Busayo Adegoke is the Assistant Deputy Managing Director at Fox Capital Group. She spoke the discuss on how she has been able to scale through the work-life puzzle anytime it clashes.

The astute project manager said finding happiness at the workplace, creating a haven of peace and fun for productivity in the workplace has made it easier for her to anticipate coming to work, contrary to a rigid working environment which makes it overwhelming for staff to operate.

Speaking on her work-life balance in Lagos, Busayo said communication has been a vital tool she uses in managing her office duties and family obligations without creating a vacuum on the two-side of the coins.

According to her, “The way I strike a balance between social life and work life is that I attend more of corporate events, the only thing that is suffering is Owanbe. I also make it up for my kids with gifts and quality time for my absence”

Chika Ibobo

In the same vein, business investment expert, Chika Ibobo shared some of the tips she has been implementing in maintaining work-life balance in Lagos.

For Chika, watching movies on Netflix, cooking as well as dancing has been a good therapy to get revitalized.

The Delta-born diva further revealed how she always takes a 24-hour rest once in two weeks without using her mobile phone, adding that it makes her more calm and energized.

”While in the midst of building your career, build your personal life as well such that you can balance the work as the pressure of the work will come and if you haven’t taken care of yourself, you could go off balance.”

Omorinola Fawole

Commenting on how she has been able to scale through the work-life puzzle, the Head of Customer Relations, CountryHill Affordable Homes, Omorinola Fawole said she has never experienced a clash between her work and social life as she keeps boundaries and balance the two, saying she switches off everything that connects her with work when at home.

“Always take out time to unwind which helps you to become more productive even during the week days. Whatever makes you unwind, choose it and give time for that.’’ She advised.

Abosede Ajiboye

Meanwhile, pointing out the numerous tasks and effective ways to maintain one’s career, family and social life as a woman, Country Head, Country Hill Affordable Homes, Abosede Ajiboye noted that understanding the roles and responsibilities of being a woman, wife and mother, is considered necessary and knowing the place each belongs would help strike a balance.

The career-driven mother of one shared some tips on how to ensure work-life balance stating that one should understand the essence of working and having it in mind to balance it with one’s social life.

Speaking on how her husband has been supportive of her career, Abosede explained that her husband have been stepping in to fill the gap during her absence despite his busy schedule.

“Most times, I’m always at work, I have a daughter and when there’s a need for something to be done when I’m not around, he steps in. We understand the fact that we both are into this career thing and there’s a balance when it comes to responsibility as regards the family”
