The Business Council of Africa has successfully concluded its highly anticipated inaugural ceremony of the BCA African Business Book of the Year Awards, recognizing exceptional achievements in business literature across the continent.
The event, held on the 19th of May 2023, brought together esteemed authors, industry leaders, Africa watchers, and literary enthusiasts to celebrate the winners in the business and economics category of this prestigious literary award.

The coveted title of this year’s winner went to Dr. Deanne De Vries for her book, “Africa: Open for Business.” Dr. De Vries, a veteran in the logistics industry, dedicated her career to traversing the African continent, providing innovative transport and logistics solutions.
Her book was praised by the judges for its clarity, practicality, and insightful overview of Africa’s business environment.
Taking the first runner-up position was Charlie Robertson, renowned economist and author of “The Time-Travelling Economist.” Robertson’s well-researched and evidence-based book provided valuable insights for policy makers and received commendation from the judges.
Russell Southwood was awarded the second runner-up position for his book, “Africa 2.0: Inside a Continent’s Communications Revolution.” Southwood’s exploration of the communications sector and its role in driving Africa’s progress over the past two decades resonated with the judges.
Arnold Ekpe, Chairman of the Business Council for Africa, congratulated all participants in the competition for their exceptional achievements, stating, “Every book was unique in its own way, and each had its distinct style and scope, making them equally enjoyable.
I am delighted to witness the launch of these awards. We hope the BCA Annual Africa Business Awards will encourage and promote serious discussion and analysis of businesses and economies in Africa.”
The BCA African Business Book of the Year Awards received over 30 submissions from diverse authors across the continent. From the shortlist of eight books selected by the Awards Committee, the winners were determined. This event served as a testament to the influential role of business literature in inspiring and driving positive change throughout Africa.
